A conversation with
Chris Schulz reveals that he has all the essential qualities that can
propel a sculptor to great heights: he has vision, drive and a pure
love of form, coupled with a fundamental attraction to the medium of
bronze. In a young sculptor these qualities give life to the foundation
skills, and will take those elements to exciting levels as the artist
explores the inspirations that drive him.

Schulz is already
adept at capturing the nuances of the human form‹and this is no small
accomplishment, given that all artists acknowledge the inherent challenges
of depicting the human anatomy‹in three dimensional art these challenges
are magnified tremendously. Schulz has the innate ability to depict
the human form with truth, but more importantly, he has the sensitivity
to endow the forms he creates with that mysterious aura of energy and
spirit that make figurative sculpture so powerfully emotive. His journey
has begun, and he has prepared himself by studying the anatomy with
Edmund Shumpert, and the technical aspects of bronze casting under Richard
MacDonald. These two rigorous mentors, each highly respected in his
own right, taught Schulz the importance of a thorough grounding in technical
excellence.
What Schulz is seeding
with each piece is an indefinable sense of integrity and energy. The
most interesting aspect of the human form, for him, is the way posture,
form and composition convey a sense of the subject¹s thoughts. This
communication is figurative sculpture at its highest level‹if a sculptor
can capture the essence of a moment of internal struggle, or give the
viewer a sense of the subject¹s frame of mind, then the result is a
work of art worthy of the name. It becomes timeless. Schulz wants to
take "the strongest things I know and make them into art". This is a
pure and simple definition of what sculpture should be about. Schulz
explains, " I live for sculpture, and everything I experience, I bring
to it".
This journey is
bound to be a fascinating one to watch, as Schulz takes the medium he
was meant to master and drives himself to uncover what is most unique
about his vision, his creation, and his passion.
